The site, Manbunhairstyle.net, gives credit to “hipsters” in New York trying to differentiate from the regular hairstyles for the start of the man bun trend. It then spread across the United States as well as internationally.
“Men have been coming in for a long time asking for me to leave their hair long on the top,” Angela Biancamano hairstylist and owner of Salon A in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. “That has been the style for awhile, but recently they are doing it so they can put in a bun.”
This trend is not only for those who consider themselves hipsters or trendsetters and imitators. “I consider myself on trend. Joe Pellegrino, an avid man bun supporter and wearer, said. “I try to stay up to date on the coolest styles, but I don’t do them because they’re in I do them because I like it.” He believes that this is only the beginning.

However, the man bun has been used for centuries by many other cultures. Viking soldiers and Japanese samurais both used man buns to protect themselves from enemies. This prevented enemies from grabbing their hair and pulling them back while in combat.
It is very different from where the trend can be seen today. “I fell like it’s big on college campuses, but starting to spread its bug in Hollywood,” Pellegrino said.
