Learning Outcome One: Explain leadership communication theories and concepts. The Air Force relies heavily on the Full Range Leadership Development which incorporates many different leadership communication theories and concepts. The Air Forces states that the Full Range Leadership Development (FRLD) was adopted because it combined the best parts of past leadership theories and concepts (USAF, 2015). The Air Force furthers explains that FRLD is unique and requires people to see leadership as a system that is made up of three main elements: the leader, the follower and the situation (USAF, 2015). The opposite of Management by Exception (Passive) is Management by Exception (Active). In this leadership behavior, the communication is more engaging and the leader is more involved, keeping subordinates and process in control. The leader communicates things more clearly, with detailed instructions, observing things closely and is very active in supervision. Contingent Rewards also known as Transactional Leadership is the first leadership and communication behavior in the more effective realm of the FRLD Model. This behavior model requires effective communication because it is basically like setting up small contracts where the subordinates receive something for reaching their goals that the leader helps establish along with ways to achieve them supports them along the way. The leader must be an effective communicator because in order for the subordinate to reach their goal, they must first honestly know what it is, and if help is needed they must be able to trust in what the leader says.
