Mama's Monologue

Going through the festival, I had ran straightly in front of many families, dancers, and mini shops set up just like senhor Henrique. Oh man, the expression on the little girl’s face when I zoomed straight past her, almost knocking over her corn on the cob. I was yelled at, but I did not care. Not like a lot of police were out to catch a running teenager in a social environment anyway. I wasn't stealing or anything. I just needed to get out of there. My heart was racing. My own heartbeat was a metronome in my head conducting my movements. “Left foot, right foot… left, right, left, right.” What if they were still following me?
Finally… I've reached the edge of the festival where people were less crowded, but still dancing. Panting hard, feeling like I want to throw up, I stop and rest. Why? Why were they so mean? Then I remembered my mama telling me about the people stingy with their money. Those people had nice clothes, watches, and several soccer balls in a bag. I was told that they look down at us.
“But why mama?” I once had asked.
“Because, my son, those people think they have power. However, it doesn't mean that it isn't true. They could but this house away from us if they wanted to.” Mama said.

I feel groggy and tired, but I walk to senhor Henrique’s store. It was empty, he’d been there. I just remembered it was sábado. I didn't have to work today. I felt all my sadness and tiredness melt away and jumped. I was invited to my old classmates birthday. He always hung out with more upper class people, but thought I was okay. I always thought he was interesting since he had so much cool stuff and nice clothes. I ran back home to tell my mama since papa was out to work. After telling her, I walked to Carlos’s house. I couldn't wait to see him again since it's been about two weeks since we had last seen each other. Just as I went in and saw all the people, I felt the same

Saying by to Momma Skitles and Daddy Spree, I walked into my new sanitized room. After looking around, I decided to take the bottom of the bunk bed in the far corner. “Better to have one close to the ground and near the closet.” I started making my bed when I got another sudden hunger pang. I doubled over as the intensity of my hunger overtook me.…

For many parents, the birth of a new child brings joy and glee. However for my father, I was a burden made by his late-night illegal activities. West Englewood is an area many people have not heard of - it’s tucked inside the southwest side of Chicago. During the day, the people of Englewood would wake up to the smell and sound of gunshots and burning tyres. Police officers would parade the streets in their well-ironed uniforms and the alleys would be covered with bright and colourful graffiti of sayings and images, which I didn’t understand at the time.…

The play A Raisin in the Sun was written by Lorraine Hansberry, and is set in a poverty-stricken, black section of Chicago in the 1950’s. In the passage above, Lena Younger known as Mama, the functioning head of the household, is speaking to her thoroughly demoralized adult son, Walter. Mama’s statement reflects a change of heart she experiences about her role in the Younger family and what she needs to do to protect it. In this passage, Hansberry explores how the control of money in a family can be equated with empowerment, and society’s presumed role for men in families, during these evolving times. Walter is obsessed with material wealth and feels his manhood is judged by his inability to support his family.…

It was a very cold and quiet night wind moving across a ground covered in an icy sheen where even the footpath of a mouse could be heard. As I was walking the only thing on my mind was how I will tell Victor that I killed Angela. As I began to walk back home, I saw a young woman she was as beautiful as a freshly grown rose her face was as light as a shining star in the sky and her long brown hair flowing through the wind freely. “Angela” I cried, hoping that the lady didn’t notice me staring “Excuse me sir are you ok.? “she said anxiously.…

I stood amongst the crowd of people who had gathered to see what the commotion was; most recoiled in disgust at the sight of him. There lay a woman, whom no one had known well, but who had approached all who roamed the streets. Her face was pale—paler than mine, even—covered with thick layers of makeup that hid the wrinkles of her skin. The police would not expect me; I was masterful in my disguise.…
