The student population at this college reflected California’s ethnic diversity group who were also participants of this study. A survey was given out in September of 2002 over a two-week period. According to the registration, most of the students attended daytime classes at the community college. A letter and fact sheet about the survey was sent out the students a week prior to the survey being given. A trained staff member from the Prevention Research Center in Berkeley handed out the survey during class time; each student was informed that the survey consisted of questions related to drinking and other related issued and that their participation in the survey was completely voluntary. The questionnaire was completely anonymous and their answered were insured to stay confidential. After each student completed the survey they received $20 for their participation. For example, 56% of males reported the use of malt liquor and 48% of females reported drinking malt liquor. Even though the results were not as significant, the showed that slightly more underage drinkers reported the consumptions of mal liquor than did of-age drinkers, 52% underage reported using malt liquor and 47% of-age drinker reported the use of mal liquor as well. Results showed that drinkers, specifically malt drinkers, often used other substances while they were drinking. Results also showed that rates of problem behavior were higher for those who were malt liquor drinkers, rather than those who did not use malt liquor and then nondrinkers.
7) Take home message The use of malt liquor should be further investigated to see its relationship with heavy or problem drinking, other substance use and other problem behaviors. From this study we see statistics according to people’s answers on the survey, but I think their need to be an experiment done where a placebo is put into place. These results show that there is definitely a relationship between the uses of malt liquor and the effects on people heavy drinking, substance use and behavior, even though it may be ore common in certain ethnicity groups.
