Empirical research has examined the relationship between senior demographic characteristics and nutritional intake finding racial and ethnic minorities have decreased rates of consumption of the nutrient rich diets needed as individuals’ age (Deirelein et al., 2014; Ervin & Kennedy-Stephenson, 2002; Storey & Anderson, 2014; Wolf et al., 1996). For example, Deierlein et al. (2014) find Hispanic and Black elderly have the highest intakes of fats, sodium, and added sugars. Additionally, they find elderly individuals who are married have increased rates of consumption of nutrient rich foods. The response of the survey was 82% male and 64% female. Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed in 86%, with 62% of participants taking oral agents alone, and 28% were taking insulin alone. In conclusion, 72% of the participants reported that experienced difficulties managing their diabetes, the most common hardship were related to diet, such as the type of food the shelters provide, and their inability to make dietary choices. The most common issues mentioned were excessive amounts of starch and sugars (reported by 14% of the responders), few fruits and vegetables (reported by 12%) and large amounts of fat ( reported by 8%). The overall statement was, the meals at the shelters were not appropriate for people who have diabetes.…
The obesity epidemic is a result of poor diet and a lack of physical exercise, as argued by Lutz, Mazur and Litch (2014). Age UK (2017) discovered that there is an estimate of three million malnourished individuals within the United Kingdom, with over one million of these individuals being over age sixty-five as of 2016. The Royal College of Nursing (2017) show that signs of malnutrition can include poor levels of concentration as well as respiratory problems and an increased risk of infection. Obesity is a result of the increased intake of energy and a decreased level of exercise, stated by Waugh and Grant (2014). Elderly population can be divided into groups, including the functional elderly, the frail elderly and those with chronic diseases. Each of these groups has specific nutritional requirement. Several factors have to be taken into account when creating a diet for these people, including, age, gender, living conditions, mental and physical state, the medications they may need to take, and social support. The functional elderly are likely to have nutrient needs that do not vary markedly, except for a few nutrients, from those of the healthy younger population.
