Malignant mesothelioma is considered as an aggressive form of cancer and giving out accurate prognosis is not that easy. Prognosis for patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma is somehow discouraging since it has a long latency period. In most cases, it is only identified when it is in a radical stage already.
What is malignant mesothelioma?
It is a rare tumor of mesothelial cells and it mostly affects the pleura (the lining that shields the lungs). Most people diagnosed with mesothelioma are likely to have been exposed to asbestos; a soft grey mineral that does not burn and is used by electricians and building to prevent heat loss or fire.
Doctors have classified malignant mesothelioma into 3 categories:
Peritoneal mesothelioma-a tumor that attacks a very thin layer of tissue called peritoneum which covers the stomach and is found on the inside of the abdomen.
