Islam Misconceptions Essay

Many misconceptions arose in the topic of Islam. The word “Jihad,” beheading Muslims who convert, beating wives, rejection of all other prophets, stoning those that commit adultery and superiority is for males with disregard of females are some of the many misconceptions taken upon Islam. Although one might not believe in a religion, one should educate himself or herself to better understand a religion instead of just believing whatever seems wrong about it, just because one does not believe in it. The word “Jihad” has been misunderstood by non-Muslims, it has been subconsciously linked in the brains of non-Muslims that the word Jihad means terrorism, war or any act of violence. As a matter of fact, a new term has been given to terrorist which is “Jihadist.” In Yahoo news, Serge Daniel wrote an article entitled “Mali arrests jihadist attack suspects,”(1) The New York Post published an article by Yaron Steinbuch entitled “ISIS planning attack on Big Ben, Eiffel Tower: British jihadist”(2) NBC News published an article entitled “Boston Marathon Bombing Jury Sees Jihadist Material Taken From Tsarnaev Devices,” (3) The media degraded the word Jihad by connecting it to terrorism so it is common sense that misconceptions about Islam would arise. In the Quran, Jesus is mentioned twenty five times, Moses was mentioned one hundred and thirty times while Mohammad was only mentioned four times. Those verses that mention the prophets all speak of the goodness and greatness of those prophets. For example, the Quran says about Jesus “Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth, about which they (vainly) dispute.”(12) The Quran says about Moses “Also mention in the Book (the story of) Moses: for he was specially chosen, and he was a messenger (and) a prophet.”
