Kuhelj And Virant-Doberlet's Study

Improved Essays
Kuhelj and Virant-Doberlet conducted their study, “Male-Male interactions and male mating success in the leafhopper Aphrodes makarovi” in order to be able to determine how male-male interaction is correlated to their reproductive success. The researchers had first hypothesized that a female leafhopper is more likely to mate with male who exhibits a higher effort in their calls. The males with the longer or louder call would be more likely to get a longer response from the female, which in the end would lead to a greater chance at finding the female quicker than the other male that they were in competition with. This is important due to the fact that a male will not go near a female if there is no response to his call. The frog that was able …show more content…
After reading about this research I had wondered if female’s preference can lead to an evolution of a species over a long period of time. This is based upon that if a female were to prefer one trait over another one, and after a while a species that trait would evolve this specific trait. This question was also one of Robinson, Tudor and Morris, who wanted to explore the other half of a hypothesis from Fisher & Rosenthal who suggested that female swordfish preferred dorsal fins of smaller size, since males with larger dorsal fins tend to have more aggressive behaviors than other. Robinson, Tudor, and Morris had hypothesized that if Fisher & Rosenthal’s statement was true that the female swordfish would prefer the average swordfish dorsal fin to that of the larger sized fin. They also explored in depth how the dorsal fin had a correlation to the courtship of this species by predicted that males would raise their dorsal fins around females more than if they were alone, and that the amount of times that the dorsal fin was raised would lead to a higher amount of mating behaviors. (Robinson, Tudor, Morris, …show more content…
This is different than the study done by Robinson, Tudor, and Morris who had found that female swordfish had preferred males that didn’t have an “average” size dorsal fin. The females of this species show very difference female preferences, this could be due to the fact swordfish have less predators than the leafhopper, so they are able to be more picky with their mate, and the leafhopper wants to increase its fitness and doesn’t have the ability to be picky with her mates. This leads me to believe that if a female exhibits a physical preference in her mate that over time, that trait will evolve, like that of the swordfish. But I do not believe the ability to locate the female leafhopper in males is a trait that could be evolved due to the fact, that the female preference there is based upon luck on who is the lucky one to find her first, and if the trait for the ability to locate a mate were to evolve, in the end it would be harder for the males to find the females due to the fact there would be no advertisement calls which would then lead the ability of finding a female to decrease dramatically or nearly

Male Bean Beetle (Callosobruchus maculatus) Reproductive Success Abstract: Callosobruchus maculatus is a bean beetle that lays eggs on the surface of beans, the larvae hatch out of the eggs and immediately burrow into the bean to devour all its nutrients and mature into an adult. The study of the male’s reproductive success when given access to water versus no access could lead scientists down a path of slowing the growth of the bean beetle population. The study was performed in lab 201 September 16th, groups separated a dish of watered males with un-watered females and a group of un-watered males and females, the control, to test if the availability of water in the adult phase would affect the male’s success of offspring. The class collected no data that suggested water availability made a significant difference in the success of the male’s reproduction; the average number of eggs counted in the watered dishes were 56.8 and in the dry dishes it was 31.…

Purpose The purpose of this lab is to investigate animal behaviors by diving into the world of ethology. There are two ways pill bugs will respond to environmental stimuli: Kinesis (non-directional response) and taxis (directional response). Kinesis occurs when organisms (randomly) move around quickly when they’re unhappy and slowly when they’re happy, which is best demonstrated when one lifts up a rock or other material that the pill bugs are under. In contrast to the simpler response that does not necessarily involve many neurons, taxis is often observed in response to changes in light, heat, moisture, sound, and/or chemicals (odor).…

Most animals exhibit some type of aggressive behavior when confronted with one another, and this behavior is also shown in freshwater crayfish. Aggressive behavior in crayfish can be seen by anybody, but it becomes more prominent in a restricted laboratory setting. Groups of crayfish of about the same length and the same sex, plainly exhibit a pattern of dominance. When observed, it is noted that the crayfish perform different degrees of combative behavior. Researchers beg the question, how does the sex and the of size crayfish influence the different levels of aggression?…

Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans that use their claws called chelipeds, for warning off predators. When frightened, these crayfish lift their chelipeds to make threatening gestures, all while moving backwards or staying still. We examined how long it would take for crayfish to calm down once removed from the water and if the temperature had any influence to this observation. To do this, we placed two crayfishes in room temperature water and another two in colder water for an interval of five minutes and again for ten minutes. Once the time was up,we measured how long it took for the crayfish to lower their claws.…

Roughgarden lists different varieties of stereotypes that have affected gender expressions among certain genders. We have become accustomed to these stereotypes when most of the animal kingdom does not reciprocate these stereotypes. “Males are bigger than females”, this is a stereotype that does not apply to certain species in nature, such as female fish are larger than the male fish. “Males and females look different from one another”, this stereotype is false. As Roughgarden goes on to explain how in some species, males and females are almost indistinguishable.…

However, at the end of the year, I realized he was the complete opposite, he was the most dedicated teacher in the entire school. Introduction Oviposition is described as one of the final steps in reproduction in insects. It includes the deposition of mature eggs onto an object that is outside the body of the female insect (Saunders 2003). Where and how the organism oviposits depends on the behavioral aspects of different species. Another factor that can influence the oviposition of eggs involves the release of chemicals. The Diving Beetle chooses plants that have readily available food for their newly hatched young.…
