Throughout history there have been many examples of gender inequality and male dominance. For years, women have been dominated by their male counterparts. They have experienced heartbreak and vulnerability as a result of control and power from their significant others. Eventually, in the 19th century a revolution took place and women got the right to vote, they joined the workforce and overall became more independent. As feminism grew throughout Western society in the 21st century, women felt empowered, more self-confident and on the same playing field as men. Many people are continuously being influenced by feminist’s movements and celebrities such as Taylor Swift are no exception. Those who are familiar with the music that Swift produces …show more content…
Her album Taylor Swift is country whereas 1989 is mainstream pop. The country style approach that Swift uses on her first album depicts feelings of sadness and evokes a lot of emotion. She uses many acoustic tones which dispenses a certain vibe from her music. The tones that can be heard are softer and not as solid compared to her new style of music. The audience can hear the lack of self-confidence just by the sounds of the chords and the tempo of the music in the majority of the songs featured in her first album. There were always many assumptions and stereotypes associated with females, along with expectations that were demanded to be upheld. In the past, girls were expected to be very nurturing and ladylike. They were expected to respect the men in their lives and conform to society’s image of a woman. The music heard in Taylor’s first album shows just that kind of behaviour. The approach that the artist takes on her most recent album is mainstream pop which comes across sounding more confident than Taylor Swift. She develops a fresh new style of music that emits much stronger vibes. This album allows listeners to feel empowered and inspired. Although both of these albums share a common artist, Taylor Swift’s sound has really developed and demonstrates more individuality and power. Not only are there differences in the type of music Taylor produces, her style is visibly …show more content…
Although many of Swift’s songs are based on love and romance, her perspective on the theme differs in each album. In her initial album many of her songs included lyrics portraying male dominance. Her music demonstrates feelings of unhappiness because of the way that she is treated by a member of the opposite sex. In the song Cold as You she sings, “and you do what you want ‘cause I’m not what you wanted.” This shows that women often are expected to conform to the needs of men. Women must act or dress a certain way in order to be accepted; these unfair expectations set innocent girls up for a lack of self-confidence. Women were so frequently looked down upon and treated unfairly. In her song A Place in this World Taylor questions her existence in the world. Swift, just like any other girl, has troubling finding herself as seen in this lyric, “oh, I’m just a girl trying to find a place in this world.” Women in history were rarely treated as individuals but rather as servants to men and caretakers to children. Growing up in a society that treats women unfairly taught Swift to feel less confident in herself as an adolescent and believe that she was property to men. In her newer album 1989 Taylor produces more empowering music. She becomes more self-involved and content about the way she is and despite all the hatred against her, she rises above it and creates inspiring music. Many

Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I.’s 2013 music video for their hit single “Blurred Lines” depicts three females in little clothing performing seemingly innocent acts that have sexual connotations while dancing around and engaging with the three well dressed men who seem to only be watching the women, which sets the tone that the women are only there to serve as eye candy for the men. The first thing the 503.3 million viewers of the “Blurred Lines” music video on Vevo saw was Thicke lying in bed with a topless model while his arm assumes a dominant position over her body almost completely blocking her from the view of the camera. While this position may be perceived as simply cuddling, in the realms of this music video that reflects…

Many pop culture icons have attempted to make a change, but none have seemed to have done it quite like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
