In Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science, Atul Gawande, an experienced general surgeon, discusses the limitations and obstacles one must face in the world of medicine today. Throughout the book, he reveals stories and patient cases he has faced in order to instill his point in his audience: medicine is human, and with that, it is not perfect. Gawande’s writing flows very well, and the stories he presents can be enjoyed and analyzed by a wide audience. However, persons with a medical background may find the information given in the book to be slightly more interesting than those without it only because it is so medicine-based. I believe this book completely fulfilled its purpose.…

The room temperature in the room and the wind blowing nearby when the experiment was occurring may have affected the results at one point. The condition of the original metal used for the paper clip may have also changed how things turned out. Based from eHow’s “What Type of Metal Is a Paper Clip?”, the types of metals used in the experiment include actual steel and metal alloys, which react differently under heat at least in one way or another.…

There are about .97 males per every 1 female in America, which is statistically significant, putting me and my gender in a relative minority. The pure numerical difference bears no impact on my life, but for some reason, the shape of my genitalia has. Quite frankly, the "feminist movement" has gotten out of hand and lost sight of its original goals. I have actually been confronted solely because I exist in the state that I do, as a male. Just because some men have done shameful things in the past, does not mean that I, or anyone else should feel guilty about…

The article, “Hands Off Clitoridectomy” by Yael Tamir, discusses the controversial topic of clitoridectomy, and all the arguments within the subject while opening up a new way of perceiving it by comparing it to our own society and practices. She suggest that indeed the practice of clioridectomy is a gruesome and gutwrenching, but there is more to the subject than just the moral issues of it. She address the political and social aspects of performing and living with the procedure and addresses them with passive but firm arguments. Her main point of the article is that our society needs to stop judging and creating prejudices aimed at other cultures or societies when in fact we could be bettering our own society rather than critiquing others.…

Now this also traces back to the school curriculum. The domestic science lessons teach schoolgirls that sharing razors and knives is risky and using these objects during circumcision is more dangerous than remaining uninitiated. As a response, women who circumcise girls state “Why is it we didn’t have problems like AIDS around when everyone was getting circumcised? … Circumcised girls don’t fornicate.” This shows that being initiated is not about health or the unsanitary issues related with it, instead it is about culture and following tradition.…
