Beauty Myths For Women: Male Gaze

Male gaze deals with how an audience views people presented, when men look at women, how women look at other women and how women look at themselves. Male gaze is defined as the audience being put in the visual perspective of white, heterosexual men, where women are altered into sexualized characters. The female body is the focal point, where the camera lens focuses on certain areas like their legs, breast, hips or lips. Women are made to appear as either submissive to men to solidify the patriarchal hierarchy of society or as fictionalized erotic beings that are only there to fulfill men’s fantasies. Many films and advertisements are made to please the white, heterosexual male audience, where women are portrayed as sexualized objects. They are regarded to as objects to be looked at rather than heard, while men themselves are never the ones being looked at but rather the ones doing the looking. She is unable to do anything about it however, because sexual harassment of women has become a social norm. the advertisement itself is unrealistic because what woman would leave her window open at night much less undress right in front of a mirror with the window open. It makes the blonde seem like a dumb bimbo who just cares about her appearance and welcomes the catcalls/harassment. Based on beauty standards, this woman fits into mold of what is deemed as beautiful in our society, she is fair-haired, sun-kissed women who is in perfect shape along with perfect nails.
