One of the many strictures that Malcolm had firmly adhered to was monogamy. In Elijah’s rules, members could only have sex with one woman and that had to be one’s wife. Thus, Malcolm X faces his SUPREME ORDEAL when he discovers that Mr. Elijah Muhammad, who he has “adored” and revered and dedicated his life to preaching his word is a chronic adulterer and liar. Malcolm revealed, “And so my mind simply refused to accept anything so grotesque as adultery mentioned in the same breath as Mr. Muhammad's name” (page 301). Never in Malcolm's difficult life had anything devastated him as this betrayal. Even worse than the actual faithlessness was what Muhammad had been doing behind his back, which was to set Malcolm up, in order to deflect the scandal onto Malcolm X. The “Special World” crumbled to dust. Finally, to make everything more horrible, Mr. Muhammed puts a “kill order” on Malcolm X. He is shattered. Malcolm survives “death” and travels to Saudi Arabia to embark for Ka’ba, the sacred house, and discover knowledge and fulfill the pilgrimage rights of Islam. Not only does Malcolm have an illuminating, spiritual journey, but also he finds the real Islam. One complaint that Malcolm did express during his years as Mr. Muhammad’s student was that there wasn’t enough action in their message. So Malcolm uses his newfound understanding of his religion, to preach and form a new society that will help eradicate racism. Malcolm expresses that each day may be his last because he knows that there are white and black men who hate him and would like to see him dead, but especially his former friends from the Nation of Islam.
