With much time and wisdom, Malcolm has seen himself to be a coward, and intends to advance his demeanor. Determined to confront reality, Malcolm appreciates the fact that Macduff " . . . hath from my soul / Wiped the black scruples, reconciled my thoughts / To thy good truth and honor . . . " (IV.iii.134-136). Therefore, he recognizes "My first false speaking / was this upon myself / What I am truly / Is thine and my poor country's to command . . . " (IV.iii.149-151). With a wiser outlook on reality, Malcolm recognizes that he is not as unfit to be king as he thought.
