In our current society, people abuse many things: alcohol, drugs, and other people; this operation would also be abused. According to Richard Haier, a neuroscientist and professor emeritus at the University of California, our cruel society would be rid of “petty crimes” but it is likely that “white collar crimes, such as banking scams and cover-ups by pharmaceutical companies” would become more prevalent (Richard Haier). This operation would not only be used for its intended purpose, but also for personal gain, producing negative effects in society. In the event that one may become addicted to this surgery, society may become unclear on how much intelligence is too much. Currently, human clinical trials have not even started, the laws,rules, and regulations coming with this operation have not been discussed, and the main audience is unclear. Not only does this surgery pose medical side effects, it also has social side effects. From a social standpoint, intelligence has the potential to bridge gaps between people or ruin the connection. This operation will likely be expensive, making it cost-prohibitive for low-income people. As the majority of wealthy people would purchase and achieve increased intelligence and the worldwide average will increase, those whom the operation was not performed on would be left behind. Many studies prove that becoming a more intelligent being will be a risky ordeal. Under no circumstances should a procedure to increase intelligence be performed, for not only does it leave one with lifelong side effects, but also would ruin the small amount of unity we have.
