For example, Bill Joy, a famous computer scientist, as well as one the four founders of Sun Microsystems, had one of the most compelling success story. Joy happened to gain an excessive amount of computing hours before the hype of time sharing came about Gladwell states, “...in his freshman year, he stumbled across the Computer Center- and he was hooked.” (Gladwell 36) This happened around the time that the University of Michigan opened up an advanced computer center in 1971. This was an arbitrary opportunity for Bill Joy because he did not think he would ever enjoy computers, since has never dealt with such in high school. He was into math and engineering. Joy gave so much of his time to computing and practiced so much that he accumulated many hours. Gladwell states, “So, so maybe...ten thousand hours?” (Gladwell 47) Joy was able to obtain this many hours because he had the opportunity to use the computers in the University of Michigan, where he was able to trick the computer system so he wouldn't have to pay for the time. For this reason, Bill Joy was able to become an expert, university of michigan gave him this opportunity. Also motivation and practice plays a role in his success. Because without the two and the opportunity, it wouldn't have been possible for Joy to make 10,000 hours of computer time. You have to be really dedicated to what your …show more content…
Gladwell starts off the book by revealing the Canadian birth charts for the hockey league. He points out that being born earlier than others can have a tremendous impact on whether you end up being successful. Gladwell states, “ ...he didn’t start out an outlier. He started out just a little bit better.” (Gladwell 31). In fact, it's really common among sports and the school system where kids are put into a ability group or advanced grouping. Therefore, the kids placed into the advanced group have a better education because they are being taught different things than the kids who aren't in that category. As a result, the advanced group is outstanding and they learn more skills. In addition to the school and sports system, children who are born a year earlier than others have a higher success rate because they have more time and practice to do more things than the rest. Gladwell states, “He always made the Triple A teams. As a first-year peewee or a first-year bantam, he always played on the top rep team.” (Gladwell 34). The father of one of the hockey Canadian players, Wasden, has a son named Scott whose been playing hockey ever since. Scott has been playing since he was young and was the biggest kid for his hockey team. What the father didn’t notice is that his son was a big for his age group because his
