Malcolm Baldrige's Contributions

Malcolm Baldrige was born October 4, 1922. Due to his success in business and his great character he was nominated in the early 1980’s by then President Ronald Reagan as the 26th United States Secretary of Commerce. As the United States Secretary of Commerce his job was to promote American businesses and industries. Baldrige was dedicated to his position and contributed to the Administration trade policy. Baldrige served in this position until his death on July 25, 1987. Due to Baldrige's excellent managerial skills and his contributions leading to improvements in the economy, the Quality Improvement Act of 1987 was renamed the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award after his death. The purpose of The Baldrige National Quality Award is to give recognition to businesses and organizations for their outstanding and excellent performance and service. “The award was originally intended for manufacturing businesses but evolved to include service companies, healthcare, nonprofit and government organizations and educational institutes” (Brown. 2014. This rating is rare as it means that the services provided meet or exceed state and federal standards. Kindred maintains a high employee retention rate as well as continually receiving high satisfaction marks on surveys from patients and their families. A large part of their success is the facilities track record showing that they continually go above and beyond to provide world class satisfaction to their patients as well as their employees. Kindred is a perfect example of "Success is finding something you really like to do and caring enough about it to do it well." – Malcolm
