In 1999 the program was expanded to include the education and healthcare categories. Finally, in 2007 the non-profit sector was added as well. In order to be selected for the award organizations must apply and be judged by an independent board. The criteria for the award includes leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, human resource focus, process management and business/organizational performance results. The President of the United States annually presents the award to the winners after the selection committee has completed its process. The amount of growth hasn 't been calculated yet due to the fiscal yet. By increasing the quality of product and service that a business puts out will always increase profits. However, when a national award is involved it shows the consumer that they are dealing with a quality institution that puts it patients above its bottom line.. The Malcolm Baldridge award also takes into account what the patient satisfaction rating is and takes a site tour. These aspects not only allows the committee to see how the patients feel about the institution but, are able to see how the institution works on a day to day basis.
