Macbeth and was originally a good person (‘what he hath lost, the noble Macbeth hath won’) but, he was corrupted due to his own lust and ambition represented by Shakespeare as an out of control horse(‘I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition, which o’er-leaps itself and falls on th’other’). Macbeth’s attitude and morals towards life change significantly during the play and leaves us with a bittersweet feeling of loss. Macbeth has his own personal regrets (‘I’m afraid to think of what I have done’ pg45 line 53-54) and reveals throughout the play that he has true feelings that Malcolm’s judgement does not acknowledge (‘life’s but a walking shadow, a brief player’). This makes Macbeth not simply a butcher but, a real human being who made the wrong choices in life because he was not born with these evil morals but instead persuaded or convinced into them. Malcolm’s dismissal cannot be fully accurate because he is character and not as a bystander therefore, his view will not take into account protagonist’s history and might be from a biased perspective. Macbeth cannot be summarised as the ‘dead butcher’ because such a judgement is too simple for such a complex human being. Lady Macbeth’s judgement was also not completely accurate because she was more than just an fiend like queen, she was a women that wanted the best for her husband no matter what evil but, in contrast to what Shakespeare intends I do not view her as one of the witches simply because all her actions are for the good of her husband and she does undergo consequences for her actions at the end. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s relationship was ignored in Malcolm’s judgement besides being a pivotal factor in the overall judgement of these two characters. Therefore, Malcolm’s judgement of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is overly simple does not accurately represent the true characteristics of both characters.
