Malaria, a disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes, is a topic that should be upheld to the topmost importance. However, there are countries in Africa that are suffering from this disease, Ghana being one of them. Malaria contributes greatly to the poor health state in Africa. For example, in Suntreso polyclinic and Agogo Presbyterian Hospital in Kumasi City (the second largest city in Ghana), when about five hundred patients were interviewed, 17% had severe malaria, 8% had moderate to severe malaria and 75% had regular malaria. Malaria is also responsible for 38,000 deaths per year and over 2,000 deaths in pregnant women, accounting for 9% of all deaths in pregnancy. At the time of the study, the national treatment for malaria was chloroquine, an antimalarial drug. Quinine was, and still is the recommended drug for severe malaria. The people of Ghana are suffering and are misusing the medications. Also, the misuse was highest among those who used left-over drugs and those who got their drugs from qualified chemical sellers. The medications from the pharmacies were better than the ones from the chemical sellers and those who treated themselves with left over drugs. Most Ghanaians get malaria treatment at their homes which is not at all effective, especially due to their poor access to health care services, limited public health campaigns on medicines use, or poor regulation of the pharmaceutical distribution system in the country, causing some patients to be treated at home instead of going to a hospital.
