On Oklahoma postman rescued a young girl from a burning house, a paramedic bride helped people in a car crash, despite the fact that her wedding was still going on, and a marine who lost both feet in Afghanistan saved a baby from a car crash. They all had a choice to walk away and not care at all, yet they decided to take a risk and save a life. These courageous heroes didn’t even think twice about the possible harmful consequences of their actions. The actions of true heroes today are deemed as selfless only if they put their lives in danger to save someone, perform beneficial deeds without expecting anything in return, or take bold actions despite fears.

During current times, one example of a hero that demonstrated this is Malala Yousafzai. Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban for encouraging girls to get educated. She was even hospitalized because of the bullet. Despite how she still receives constant death threats from the Taliban, Malala has maintained her positive stance on education for women and has continued to create campaigns for girls’ education (Document C). Malala Yousafzai is similar to Sir Gawain, who’s the hero of the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In this story, due to the fact that the Green Knight gets his head chopped of by Gawain, Sir Gawain is faced with a situation in which he has to decide whether or not to uphold his promise of getting his own head cut off. Although Sir Gawain’s fear of becoming headless tenses him up, he still upholds his oath and daringly travels to the place where the Green Knight lives. Because of Sir Gawain’s loyalty to his promise, he ends up saving his life. Due to Sir Gawain’s noble action, despite his fear of getting his head sliced off, he is the definition of a selfless
