What is a teen activist? A teen activist is a person who works long and hard in order to speak out against or stop a problem in the world. Its take determination and patience to become a great teen activist. They use peaceful methods to try to stop a problem. So many teen activists are often role models to many kids including me. A few of these teen activists include Malala Yousafzai, Alex Lin and, Valens Ntamushobora. Malala Yousafzai is often considered one of the greatest teen activists to ever live. He plays an important part of the ongoing struggle of women's rights in Rwanda. Based on an article called “Valens Ntamushobora” on the website http://www.thextraordinary.org he was born in Rwanda in 1988. While we were growing up, he saw many injustices towards women in his village. As a result, he decided he needed to speak out to stop these acts. He then partnered with the Let Us Stay Alive program (LUSA). LUSA is a program which is designed to help women in Rwanda to have a way of making an income. He continued to speak for women's rights, but this was not always easy, often these ideals went unrecognized in Rwanda. Valens is still promoting women's rights and in 2010 he received the Pearsons award. As stated in the article Alex Lin, Teenage activist, he was born in Westerly Rhode island in 1995. In 2004 he came upon a Wall Street Journal article talking the E-waste or Electronic waste problem. Alex once said “It first alerted me to the e-waste problem, and warned of an e-waste tsunami to come.” As mentioned on the website http://ifixit.org the problem with E-waste is that is carries amounts of hazardous chemicals and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium and Alex Lin realized this is going to become a problem to the environment. So he started W.I.N (Westerly Innovations Network) which is a group of Alex's friends that try to figure out how to stop the E-waste problem. W.I.N did more than that, for instance, they organized an E-waste drive. It was a huge success they ended up recycling 20,000 pounds of Electronic waste. After the drive W.I.N then found out that refurbishing E-waste is seven times more effective than recycling it. W.I.N then started refurbishing computers. They had so many refurbished computers that that started making media centers in less developed countries in Africa and Asia so far there are 7 of them. E-waste dumping was still a massive problem in fact according to www.dosomething.org 70% of toxic waste dumped is E-waste.
