Born on July 12th, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan was Malala Yousafzai. Malala was named after the Pashtun heroine Malalali. Malala has two brothers and no sisters. In Pakistan, having a daughter is not praised. When a girl is born she is not welcomed by the mother nor father and it is not something you rejoice in. The daughter is the so-called honour of her father, brothers, and all of the men in her family. If she lets down that honour she could be killed. But aside from all of the traditional views on having daughters, Malala’s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, praised Malala and wanted to give her a sense of security, strength, and love. This proves the severity of the gunshot wounds. Malala was also put into a medically induced coma because of the pain. Once she was transported to the hospital she was relieved her from the coma and began surgeries. 72 hours worth to be exact. ("72 Hours That Saved Malala: Doctors Reveal for the First Time How Close She Came to Death") The bullet caused swelling in the brain so a portion of her skull was removed for treatment. This is because the bullet shattered the most fragile bone in her skull which drove fragments into her brain. She also underwent a surgery to repair a facial nerve which was damaged on the left side of her face. Doctors did not know whether or not Malala would survive but she luckily was released in March of 2013. ("Malala Yousafzai - Biographical")
After the attack, Malala’s popularity increased even more. She received overwhelming support from people all over the world. She gave hope to many other women who were in the same shoes as she. Malala became a role model to many young women, especially from Pakistan. Everyone wanted to interview Malala and she became very famous in a short amount of
