As a young girl, Malala Yousafzai defied the odds in protesting that girls in Pakistan be allowed to receive an education. She was shot by Taliban in 2012… She survived. Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. Growing up she became involved in supporting girls education. In 2009, Malala started creating blogs about education rights. On October 9, 2012, Malala was on her way home from school. A man boarded the same bus demanding to know who was Malala. The gunman fired hitting Malala on the left side of her head. The shooting left Malala in critical condition. She was airlifted from a Pakistan Hospital to Birmingham, England. Malala went through many treatments and surgeries but amazingly suffered little to no major brain damage. After all of the treatment, Malala began to attend school in Birmingham, in March of 2013. Malala did not win but was nominated again for the Peace Prize in 2014. In October, she won the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the youngest individual to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said, “She is the pride of Pakistan.” On July 12, 2015, her birthday, also known as Malala Day, she continued to take action on global education by opening a school for Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon. In October 2015, a documentary was made about her life. THe documentary was titled, “He Named Me Malala.” Today, Malala still commits and leads the support of education rights for girls around the world.
