Is this article making you distracted and confused? An article critique. The purpose of a literature review is to evaluate prior published writings, in order to formulate a general concept of the topic and to suggest future research studies. An article titled, Distracted and confused: Selective attention under load by Lavie (2005) successfully reviews a variety of studies to determine how a “cognitive load” effects distraction. The author uses numerous articles and figures, in attempt to demonstrate how the level and type of cognitive load impact an individual’s attention and vulnerability to distraction. The findings indicate that just instructing people to focus on a certain task will not prevent distractions. In addition to concluding that a high perceptual load increases attention, while high cognitive-control load increases distraction. The review suggests future research should seek to demonstrate distractor-related neural activity through an original neural model that would allow the activity to be measured by the level and type of load in task-relevant processing (Lavie, 2005).
