Paul C. Nutt's Making Tough Decisions

Improved Essays
In Making Tough Decisions, Paul C. Nutt discusses the lack of instruments to find the truth in decision making. But if we are to believe as Nutt writes, then there is even a stronger need for the foreseeable element. Clairvoyance is not a prerequisite to becoming a world leader but is need to establish a thought process that includes the understanding of foreseeable risk. (Nutt, Pg. 3) When our leaders are faced with tough decisions and lack the understanding for the implications of a bad outcome, the results are inexcusable, as such bad outcomes could have been prevented or at least mitigated when leaders give consideration to uncertainty, ambiguity and the conflict created by the decision. The forty-third president of the United States should …show more content…
He has promised both no wars and has done/tweeted everything to create the conflict that eventually leads to war. President Trump’s obsession with Twitter and the one hundred and forty characters are a part of his decision making, because that it is his mode of communicating: it would be humorous if he was not so dangerous. President Trump’s tweets are damaging the world's view of America, our leadership and the decision making of our leaders. It would not be hyperbole if I stated that because of the President’s tweeted foreign policy decisions, we are at a tipping point of fear and we are stumbling dangerously close to war with North Korea, a war that would no doubt trigger World War III.
Again, at times he is laughable but when you stop to think, you should actually be worried. Trump’s policies towards North Korea have become more of a requiem of Mr. Trump the person and less about his politics. He is viewed as a narcissist, an egomaniacal dangerous fool and he is prone to extreme bad behaviors. But his defense is he was elected by an electorate whose larger issue was not North Korea. So in many ways, we are responsible for Mr. Trump and his foreign policies, democracy at

These personalities explain why some presidents are more successful than others at setting their agenda. A successful president must be able to influence congress to work on a policy of interest to the president. The president can’t govern alone. The legislative and the executive branch must work together and compromise in order to get things done (Pika, Maltese, p. 201). Unfortunately, they don’t always compromise and instead engage in difficult confrontations.…

The strategic planning process for a military objective can only go as far as the political objectives will allow. Strategic leaders must have the proper skills to help navigate this new arena. “Powell’s subsequent service under Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger and National Security Advisor Frank Carlucci prepared him well to serve as National Security Advisor to President Reagan during the last two years of Reagan’s second term and then as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush. Powell was in the vanguard of a new type of senior officer, once who could transcend and nimbly navigate the military and civilian political worlds much…

Presidency Domestic and Foreign Powers Widalvasky argues that presidents tend to be more focused on foreign affairs rather than domestic affairs. This claim stems from the fact that one of the enumerated power the constitution grants to the President in to negotiate treaties. Throughout the course of history, we have seen presidents become more involved in domestic affairs, particularly during time of crisis.…

Neustadt has influenced many modern research on presidential power. Edwards proved his hypothesis empirically that presidents must be willing to bargain with Congress to be successful, “Presidential Power and Political Science” revisits Neustadt’s theory of presidential power and asks how it has influenced presidential scholarship since its publication (Hargrove ,2001). The article covers four main points on how modern research has either modified or added on to Neustadt original research; The political resources for leadership, the relative importance of individual presidents in broad political leadership, presidential management of policy making, and the relation of the search for personal presidential power to constitutional norms (Hargrove, 2001). The author argues that Neustadt’s theory has been “beaten but it’s not broken”, meaning it is still valid today and can be applied to the modern president because we now have a better understanding on presidential leadership. There will be times presidential leadership will be weak and times it will be strong, and in these situations, it could be out of the presidents control.…

The cause of the fire on Apollo 1 was attributed to the high level of oxygen level, which coincided with Velcro (Yost, 2004). I concur that the occurrence of this incident might cause a leader to think smarter, in that, it tends to make a significant difference when one is able to know how to anticipate changes in the future effectively. This is because it usually provides what is described as a leverage in shaping one’s future (Barker, 1992). Therefore, Barker (1992) recommended that an effective leader should move away from the old style of solving a problem after it has occurred. Instead, one should use the new style of…

    Two Presidencies Theory

The President of the United States seems to wield immense power; through executive orders and bill vetoing, it often appears that the president has a disproportionate amount of influence. However, other times, the president appears limited in his influence towards policy. Aaron Wildavsky proposed a Two Presidencies theory, which proposes that the president has significant power in relation to foreign policy, but limited power in relation to domestic policy. In reality, it seems that the president has power and influence, albeit checked by different branches and entities, in all areas of government.…

In addition, Trump’s abusive tactics on how treats others, puts the U.S. in a unhealthy relationship with the world. To start, Trump has a problem with criticizing and punishing foreign leaders that don’t agree with or comply with his stances and demands. Trump’s proposal of establishing a 20% import tax coming from the U.S.-Mexican boarder is a prime example. It is a coercive measure “that is nothing more than a symbolic chokehold, punishing Mexico’s Government for noncompliance. Possible policies such as the implied tax increase are anything but presidential, considering only Trump’s demands instead of The United States overall global relationships” (Rodriguez-Cayro).…

“The modern presidency is something of a media invention, partly out of convenience – we need a protagonist, a character through which to tell the story of American politics” (Achenbach). There is no argument that the President hold enormous influence on the nation and the world. By going public the President can gather support directly from citizens for a certain law, bill, treaty, war, etc., and while he or she might not be able to rally the entire nation in his or her favor, an address from the President has a tremendous pull on the nation or will at least get the world talking. But when it comes to policy making, the President influence is much more limited. For example, although the President can institute executive orders, these orders can be overturned by congressional hearing, judicial review, or the next president in office.…

Making America Hate Again To be able to vote is undoubtedly one of the greatest aspects about the United States of America. The ability to chose our leaders and practice a democracy is something citizens of other countries only dream of having. Because of this freedom, Americans should always vote during the elections, especially this year’s Presidential election. This election is an especially unique one; the Republican candidate is a businessman with no political experience, while the Democratic candidate is a woman with decades of experience in politics. No matter the outcome, history will be made.…

Armando Avila Professor Dr. Xiao Political Science 301 US Government 16 November 2014 Presidency and Congress To this day, the president of the United States is among one of the most powerful people in the world. They derive their official authority from four sources, which are: explicit powers, chief executive, head of the state, and commander in chief of the armed forces. After reading chapters 10 and 11 of our textbook, Understanding American Government by Susan Welch and John Gruhl, it has become clear why the president is also the dominant force in foreign policy making. Several of the advantages they have include having a monopoly of information of the intelligence agencies, being able to keep information a secret, and revealing as…

Kim Jong-Un has made the country even more isolated than before by making security tighter at the border between China and North Korea, and he has made the punishments for crossing the border even more morose. Although he has enabled people to have larger economic freedom, Kim has still not allowed freedom of speech or thought. Although North Korea does not seem like it should be a powerful country, Kim Jong-Un’s philosophies and formidableness has made his nation’s army stand tall with loyalty because of the totalitarian government he runs. Because of their different political and moral beliefs, many say that Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump do not get along. “The two exchanged numerous threats of warfare, and even took to personally insulting the…
