International students social life and making friends on campuses In Nathan’s article, my freshman year, she keeps her primary focus on how international students interact with American students and the distinctive type of relationships that they build. It is quite strange to international students from Japan, Germany, Korea, England, and China that Nathan has interviewed about how non-committed American students are to the international students because Americans students do not socialize as much, and have a tendency to spend more time alone. For instance, from my Ethnographic observation, most students claim that when they cannot be close friends with American students, they usually turn toward other international students. One of the main reasons they turn towards international students is because that can relate to them, for instance, unlike American students, international students have a strong bond with their families, and they often talk or keep in contact. Also, even in Nathan’s research, most of these facts about getting along and becoming close to American students are accurate. For instance, As one student from Germany expressed that once a young lady asked "How are you?" and when the German understudy answered he was not feeling too well, the girl exchanged subjects and imagined that he never specified he felt sick. The German substitute went ahead to say that she was most likely attempting to be minding, however, in Germany that would have been swelled into a discussion (Nathan 69). This kind of interactions shows that international students also found it difficult to make new friends among American students, so they usually turned to other international students to become friends. However, the outcome of the study was very different from international students in which 75 % stated that they have more than two American friends, and 10 % indicated that they no American friends by any means(Para 4). This research is quite optimistic because another study by Baruch College Professor Elisabeth Gareis found that one in every three international students do not have any close American friends. I think that is more accurate and more precise than the other survey because when I was doing the Ethnographic Observation, I found that the majority of the American students was hanging out with their particular race and most of them claimed that they don’ have any close American friend. Even in the classroom, they would mostly chat or talk to the same type of students from their race, even if they have never met or encountered
