When one thinks about dirt, what comes to mind? Dirty items, like dirty shoes, shirts, and pants. The question comes up, is dirt really dirty? Take this thought, you play baseball, and you slide into home plate. When you get up, happy you scored the run, and you dust the dirt off. So now you are all dirty, or are you? Can they be such a thing as clean dirt? In our lab, we were giving two bags of dirt, one looked like dirt you would dig up from someone back yard (sample B), the second one was some kind of mix I have looks like grayish sand (sample A). We were asked, “Which sample would be better for growing plants?” Honestly, when it comes down to dirt or plants, I didn’t developed a green thumb, I could kill fake flowers. With this experiment we tried to decrease any forms of error. We didn’t have to write down the other groups finding, which cut out if they had any errors. We recheck the levels twice, and also, cleaned out all the cups, and measured twice. The only error, I could think of having was using all the dirt, we should have saved some. Also, Sample B which I picked had sticks, and a worm in it. This was also one of the reasons why I picked sample B. The ribbon test was performed, but the finding weren’t good. Only good thing was that we stated sample A was some kind of clay, because it did roll into a ball, and sample B didn’t. Sample B was a lot more gritty than sample A. I felt this could also be an error, because I didn’t know if we were doing it right. Sample A did make a ribbon at 5cm, others being 4cms So when one person thinks is dirt dirty? Remember there are 12 diff types of soil, with sample A being possible clay, and sample B could be have been silty loam. One thing that definitely went wrong in the lab was that we had to round about two of our measurements and the reason being was that they were exact. To exemplify, when we were reading the volume for the finishing measurement of the base for trial three, we got exactly 45.00 mL. The only problem was that, we had didn’t really have the two significant decimal numbers. Hence, we rounded our volume to 45.01 mL. Also, we got exactly 23.00 mL for our finishing volume of the acid for trial three. Therefore, once again we rounded it to 23.02mL in order to get at least two significant decimal numbers.…

The book Dirt: the Erosion of Civilizations, by David R. Montgomery is both entertaining, and an informative read. He expresses how soil is one of the most underappreciated resources, and how humans over time have been a prime factor of soil degradation. This book primarily talks about how human infiltration has gradually continued to raise the rate of soil degradation through deforestation, agriculture, poor erosion control, and disinterest in the subject presented. Agricultural soil loss is not because humanity farms but arises from how they farm. Montgomery is a geomorphologist who studies how topography evolves, and how landscapes change throughout geologic time.…

The story “Mess” by John Hollander is interesting take on the concept on cleanliness and how the human mind perceives it. Hollander starts out his essay by giving an example of how different people react to a mess. He refers to the subjects as X and Y. He states that what may seem messy to X, could be perfectly neat and orderly to Y. Hollander even goes as far to say that if Y had a pile a books, and X arranged all the books into a neat stack, the neat stack could appear to be utter chaos to Y. After this profound example, the article continues to go on and list all the different kind of messes that exist in our lives. Hollander breaks the messes into different categories such as outdoor messes, indoor messes, personal states, and personal appearance messes.…

While researching various web pages and articles regarding my place and prominence in society, I uncovered words and phrases such as “poverty stricken,” “desperate,” and “struggling.” The most compelling discovery I made, was that these words were also paired with other degrading, heinous remarks in relation to the lower middle class society. As far as low class is concerned, I never considered the actuality of my status or social construction. Upon further analysis and class discussions, I came into recognition of my own social placement. Due to my humble upbringing and simplistic lifestyle, the appropriate category for my social class would be in the lower middle area.…
