Jolly is getting paid a minimum wage job so she can't keep up a nice house for two kids. She lives in the only house that she can afford. As LaVaughn starts to go to Jollys more often she realizes that there is always things where they shouldn't be. “There isn't a place where I can put my books except places where stuff already is” (23). This quote shows that Jolly's house is very dirty and is interfering with LaVaughn learning. With this laying all over the floor this is definitely not a good environment for children. One of the biggest reasons why Jolly's house is such a bad place is because there is no place to have some peace and quiet. There is no clean and quiet place where someone can just sit down and study or get homework done. “ I got a C on my social studies test, I got a whole country wrong because I didn't study last night” (97). This quote relates to how there is no time to study at Jollys. If LaVaughn keeps going to Jollys she will continue to make bad grades because there is no time to get her work done there. Jolly can't do anything about it because this is the only house that she can afford with her money and it's
