Makayla's Behavior Case Study

The mother was interviewed by the School Psychologist by telephone. Makayla’s mother reported she and Makayla’s father had separated recently, Makayla lives with her mother and her half-sister in a new house in North Bergen. The mother reported that she has recently seen a change in Makayla’s behavior due to the family difficulties; however, mother reported she is not significantly concerned at this time, the mother said the behaviors that are affecting Makayla’s academic proficiency had occurred since Makayla started school in first grade.
The mother stated that Makayla has been struggling with reading, specifically her reading fluency. At times, the mother reported that Makayla would reverse letter when reading and writing. She is concerned that Makayla is displaying characteristics of Dyslexia. According to the mother, learning difficulties are prevalent in the family. To prevent Makayla falling behind, she has hired a tutor to read with her frequently and signed her up for the Title I Program at school. However, the mother stated Makayla continues to struggle academically.

The mother reported Makayla is very distracted and loses interest when the homework includes reading, the mother had noticed that Makayla could solve the math problems after someone has read her the question.
Makayla’s mother has requested a child study team evaluation to determine whether or not Makayla has a specific learning disability and get her the appropriate services if eligible. The mother reported that Makayla participate in cheerleading and softball for the North Bergen recreation and she will continue with it this school
