Many students who go to college find themselves changing their careers multiple times. The reason being is that it hard choosing just one major when there are so many that can be interesting. The secret to picking a major is finding not what is interesting, but instead finding what you are passionate about. Otherwise, picking a major for a lifelong career can be challenging and even sometimes frightening. It is also important to remember that you can pick more than one major, which is considered “double majoring”. Some people don’t like to work with others, while others do. Some options a social worker can choose from are: community, medical, military, child, family, or school social work, etc. Each area has a different role in making the world a better place and helping struggling people find their way to the right path. Community social work focusses on helping communities function by administering programs. Medical social workers focus on working with patients in a hospital that are facing medical issues. Military social work consists of caring for members, veterans, and families of those in the military who may suffer from mental, psychological or physical issues. Lastly, there is child, family, and school social work which offers assistance to parents, or guardians, and children who have experienced abuse, any kind of maltreatment, and mental or physical …show more content…
CPS started in the mid- to late 1800s. It was around the time of the women’s rights movement when violence in families started to arise and brought to the public’s attention. The first publicized case of child abuse reported was in 1875. A concerned bystander, Etta Angell, at the time had reported the case of Mary Ellen Wilson. Mary was a young child who had been abused. After reporting the abuse, Etta was finally fed up with the lack of response from multiple social service agencies so she had taken the case to the president of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals) (CB32). At the time of Mary Ellen’s trial, Mary did not know her own age, she was never showed affection of any sort, was whipped by her caregivers, and had been struck in the head with a pair of scissors (CB35). After a trial that lasted only ten days, the caregiver was found guilty and Mary was placed with the mother of the caregiver and she lived a much healthier
