Loneliness is another theme that the film “Moon” touches on. Sam has been in complete isolation, cut from all human contact for three years, other than his interaction with GERTY. This type of extreme alienation from society can take major psychological toll on one’s psyche. Communications with Earth have been down, and this sends Sam into a state of mind in which he experiences hallucinations. As the viewer you begin to experience his extreme loneliness Sam in facing when you witness him sitting occupying his time making his wooden model village, or even when he spoke to his plants. Furthermore, Sam must have been so grateful when he was introduced to the clones. This just makes you think about how in today’s society we are so dependent on technology. Both GERTY and HAL were programmed to fulfill a mission. HAL begins to start exhibiting signs of emotion and reveals his motivations which makes him one of the most humanistic characters in 2001, and we later find out that he will do whatever it takes to complete his mission, even if it means killing. On the other hand, GERTY is there to support Sam, and says things like, “I am here to help you” and “Can I make you something to eat.” GERTY has a flat screen as her face where you can see some form of emotion. I think this shows her in a more positive light because she has a face humans can relate more to rather than a big red eye like
