According to the Social Security Administration, nine out of ten elderly individuals age 65 and over rely upon the Social Security benefit to pay for their living expenses including prescriptive needs. Social security is a benefit that relies upon workers who pay a social security tax; those monies are used to pay for the current retired individuals. With the rising cost of living and limited income many elderly today are struggling to meet their basic needs such as housing, food, and medication. Making sure that each elderly individual has sufficient amount of funds to provide for self would significantly improve the quality of older persons’ life.
In order to fix this issue we as a society can do the following ethical things: (a) increase the age of the retirement allowing those who are willing to work to continue to do so, (b) cut on the amount of hours an elderly works per week to accommodate their needs, (c) impose on the society to have more children, (d) allow the illegal immigrants to have legitimate jobs so they may pay the social security tax, (e) improving the quality and cost of education. We must educate society about current circumstance of the elderly life, discussing our past history in order to help people understand why Social Security came about in the first place. Moreover, educating the young generations in making better investments strategies during their young age in order to have better financial outcomes as they age and reach the retirement age. Additionally, offering inexpensive and better quality education to the young, will offer the opportunity for many to be able to save more money for their retirement. We must begin to think about our young and how we might improve their quality of life from educational and employment standpoint, more seriously, in order to help our aging
