1. MAJOR MILESTONES OF MASS MEDIA 1960- TODAY 1960- The first televised debate occurred on September 26, 1960 between Nixon and Kennedy. This changed the political landscape for future campaigns. This was the era of people having access to view the debates in real-time. The television was also used for negative or critical campaign spots. Lyndon Johnson’s 1964 campaign spot of the “Daisy Girl” is considered a classic negative spot. Broadcast television was the dominant form of mass media with just three major networks.

On one hand they want the media to give as much information about a candidate to make an informed decision, On the other hand, they feel the candidate that can pay more for TV and media exposure have more influence on public option and thus can receive more votes.
As an individual, we must evaluate each candidate’s claims with a critical eye. We have an obligation to be media literate. We must remember the five questions that should be asked about any media message: 1. Who created this message?
2. What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?
3. How might different people understand this message differently?
4. What values, lifestyles, and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message?
5. Why is this message being sent?
As a people, we have the duty to ensure the information we received is credible.
