Stress is not a decision, how it is dealt within an organization is a choice. Workplace stress is the mental or emotional strain on an individual due to specific work circumstances. In the United States over 70% of workers consider their jobs to be stressful (Aamodt, 2016, p. 542). The causes of workplace stress vary from person to person. Different stresses include the amount of work given, the lack of time and resources to complete a task, constant criticism from managers, the lack of motivation provided in the workplace, or other life circumstances. Different stressors cause the body to react in different ways. Many health conditions that are caused by stress include elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, muscle tension, and perspiration. These reactions are called stress reactivity or strains (Aamodt, p.542). Not all stressors are harmful to an individual, there are two forms of stress which is called eustress and distress. Eustress is stress that results in positive energy and improvements in performance and health. Having stress can provide motivation an employee to perform well. However once an individual is in distress, which results in negative energy, it can decrease job performance and health. The stress produced is the reaction to change or instability in the circumstances. The most common causes of stress include money, the current economy, family responsibilities, relationships, concerns about personal health, housing costs, job stability, concerns about family health, and personal safety (Aamodt p. 545). To a certain extent, performance increases as stress increases. Through this the knowledge of how stress affects employee’s is useful to various amounts of organizations. To maintain employee job performance, organizations need to conduct deeper research within their company what causes stress and what motivates employees to work. Employee’s or managers need to remain aware of their internal state of how stressed they actually are.
