Mary Poppins Movie And Book Comparison Essay

Improved Essays
In the following text, I will compare the Mary Poppins book and movie. The book was written by P.L. Travers and was first published in London in 1934. The movie is a Walt Disney production from the year 1964 and was directed by Robert Stevenson.
The movie and the book are about the children Michael and Jane who experience many little adventures with their new nanny, Mary Poppins, who appeared flying with an umbrella. The main story of the book and the movie are similar but they contain some differences which I will point out in my essay.
To start with, in the book the old nanny, Katie Nanna, had already quit her job while in the movie she has not left yet. She first quit after Michael and Jane run away from her in the park to play and she could not find them. The next difference is that in the book, the mother is doing the interviews for the potential nanny, whereas in the movie, the father interviews and the mother is not part of the decision. Thirdly, a really big difference is that in the book, Jane and Michael have younger siblings. John and Barbara are twins and have their own little story about how infants see the world differently from teenagers and adults and how they will lose this point of view more and more while they grow up. In the movie, John and Barbara and their story are completely left out and Jane and Michael are the only children.

The movie portrays Mary as a mystical, loving and kind nanny whose purpose is also to bring the very strict and hard-working father back in his loving-father role. Even when she is sometimes bothered by the questions of the children, she is still a nice and pleasant person with a mission. In the book, Mary is a nanny who improves Michael and Jane's behavior and triggers their imaginations. Her character is almost cold and is sometimes stern or even rude. She is described by a person who rarely smiles and sometimes is a little too

Finally, the overall tone and mood of both pieces show us how different their purposes are. The tone of the book is eerily matter-of-fact, not giving much emotion. Mrs. Maloney acts without much emotion, and the story seems to move exceptionally quickly. Whereas in the film, characters show much more emotion, dramatizing the whole story much more than the book does. The contrasting atmospheres in each piece show, again, how the book’s purpose is to tell the story, and the movie’s is to entertain…

In the book, however, it went into more detail about how distant she was with her father. In the end, both the book and the movie have many similarities and differences. In my opinion though, I like the book better than the movie, because it goes deeper with important details than the movie does. The main characters Julie and R’s character development doesn’t change the way their relationship turns out.…

The Princess Bride book and movie have various differences and similarities, but overall the main concept portrays the same story. The book version incorporated crucial scenes that compose the plot, and a more extended explanation of the story. However, in the movie, some of these scenes were not included which refrained essential information out of the storyline and affected the audience by making it more challenging to stay on track. Both versions of the movie and book got the story across individually, but showed it in different ways, having similarities and differences.…

A few important character connections and details were in the book that were left out in the movie. In the book, for example, Kim and Mia’s relationship wasn’t as detailed in the movie. It didn’t show their fight like it did in the book and all of their childhood between the two seemed to be missing from the movie. Mia and Kim had some important things that occurred in their childhood which I thought was important and should have been included in the movie. Her grandparents also weren’t in the movie as much as they were in the book.…

One of the most important, yet seemingly small differences, is the name given to the narrator in the movie, Charlotte. She never names herself throughout the written story. The choice not to name a main character of a story was very well thought out by Gilman. A no-named character gives the readers the ability to relate because they could just as easily be this person as to anyone else. The writers of the film not only chose to name the narrator, but they chose the name of the author of the original story.…
