Major Depressive Disorder is the most severe case of depression. MDD is a mood disorder that allows one to lack interest in activities normally enjoyed (Schimelpfening). It affects ones weight, sleep, fatigue, and concentration abilities. It causes a persistent feeling of sadness that can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems, such as day to day activities and feeling worthless, guilty, and like life is not worth living for (Depression). Symptoms of MDD are angry outbursts, loss of interests (such as sports and hobbies), sleep disturbances, tiredness and lack of energy (Depression). It interferes with one’s ability to enjoy life. People with Dysthymia, constantly complain and are incapable of having fun (Dysthymia). In adults you will see symptoms such as sadness, hopelessness, lack of energy, self-criticism, and avoidance of social activities (Dysthymia). In children the symptoms are a bit different. They will show poor school performance, behavior problems, pessimistic attitude, and low self-esteem (Dysthymia). However, some people with Dysthymia may have episodes from Major Depressive Disorder causing them to be diagnosed with “double depression”
