The mood of major depressive disorder is often described by the person as depressed, sad, hopeless, discouraged, or “down in the dumps”
Differential diagnosis for major depressive disorder that the client does not met the criteria for are manic episodes with irritable mood or mixed episodes, mood disorder due to medical condition, substance/medication-induce depressive or bi-polar disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, adjustment disorder with depressed mood, persistent depressive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and, sadness.
Major depressive episodes with prominent irritable mood may be difficult to distinguish from manic episodes with irritable mood or from mixed episodes however, the client has no history of manic episodes and did not present any symptoms of a manic disorder to assume she is manic with
