Many people live life in pursuit of happiness, however, during their life’s journey they encounter many unexpected negative or overwhelming circumstances that unfortunately may lead to the feeling of devastation and uproar, such as, death of a loved one or a loss, abuse, financial difficulties, illness, and or any unsettling major event that may leave people unable to overcome and continue living a normal day to day life. Some researches consider that people may have a pre-existent family genetic history of depression, negative life events or circumstances, biological factors, and psychosomatic susceptibility to the disorder (Duman & Voleti, 2011, 2012).

Medication, such as, antidepressants have proven highly beneficial for many people suffering from a major depressive disorder, believed to reduce or in many cases eliminate the symptoms, possibly eliminating reoccurrence, and have a higher rate of success (Duman & Voleti, 2011, 2012, p. 47). There are several forms of antidepressant medications used for treating MDD, however, one that is widely used is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like, Prozac or Celexa, believed to help improve mood, restlessness, and sleeplessness (SSRIs works by helping balance the levels of serotonin in a person’s brain), inasmuch researchers have found that people suffering from MDD have lower levels of serotonin) (Duman & Voleti, 2011, 2012, pp. 47-56). Psychotherapy is based on providing a psychoanalysis, there are several different types cognitive behavioral therapy that includes relational or social therapy that work to help people readjust their maladaptive behavior by converting negative mental processes into new positive ones, identify stress then learn to manage them, rekindle and explore personal relationships, additionally reestablish mental and emotional stability (Barclay, 2016). Moreover, when individual psychotherapy is combined with medication (antidepressants) together have shown to provide relief to symptoms of depression plus proven to be highly effective (Luyten & Blatt, 2012, pp. 111-129). All MDD treatments have one thing in common they all seek to help people change their maladaptive behavior, feelings, and thinking by realizing their insensible connotations including incentives by offering ways to adjust the circumstances that may be creating the tension, realign negative, thinking (and behaviors), identify the root cause for the depressive feelings, seek ways to cope and resolve, develop self-resiliency and positive life skills (Barclay, 2016, p.
