Many things influence the public opinion of law enforcement including; job approval, officer demeanor, media, and the public 's contact with officers. The approval of the community is what gives officers their right to protect and serve them. Although some officers may not be upright and honorable people, many are forthright and honorable. When the media portrays officers of the law in any way, people in any community will assume that is what the law enforcement in their community is like even if the media took footage out of context and skewed the view. In life or death situations, human survival instinct takes over, and we can’t expect officers to be an exception to this. No matter what we do, our law enforcement will still be comprised of humans. Humans will panic, humans will make mistakes, and humans will act in their own self-interest when their life is at stake. Countless times officers have put their lives on the line for others, but this is the exception not the rule.…

Budget cuts for a significant number of law enforcement agencies have resulted in layoffs, furloughs, hiring freezes, retirement incentives, and operation consolidation or elimination. While agencies are determining how to best manage their shrinking budgets, these changes are impacting officers1 in various ways, such as creating larger patrol areas to cover, decreasing the number of backup officers, and increasing stress due to a myriad of factors experienced in the field. Most importantly, these changes impact officer safety, wellness, and health (Fiedler, 2014). At a time when an agency’s…
