As evident from the map above, eastern states such as New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, and Rhode Island have a low suicide rate compared to other states and regions. States in the west seemingly have a higher rate. For instance, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona all have suicide rates between 17.5 and 23.7. The Midwest region, however, has a generally low suicide rate. Illinois is one state in this region that stands out with a rate of only 9.9 suicides, while other states like Minnesota, Michigan, and Nebraska have low rates between 11.6 and 12.9.
