The glucose receptors allow the glucose to enter the normal cells. The glucose is transformed into pyruvate which enters the mitochondria of the cell. The pyruvate is at the beginning of a sequence of reactions, called Krebs cycle or citric acid cycle. Half-way through this cycle, another chain reaction begins, known as the electron transport chain. Most of the ATP energy in the cells is created by these two cycles.
The cancer cells have more glucose receptors and 15 times more glucose than the normal cells. However, this glucose gets inside the mitochondria of the cancer cell far less than in a normal cell. Therefore, the cancer cells have lower ATP energy because they have less pyruvate, and they have less pyruvate because they have less available
