CHAINED
2. Central Theme, Problem, Premise
My film will explore the trials and tribulations of a young man coming to terms with his sexuality, focusing on the relationships he establishes and how the people in those relationships react. “Coming out”, is a figure of speech for lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, and asexual (LGBTQ+) people 's self-disclosure of their sexual orientation (or lack thereof) and/or gender identity. Man Vs Himself, The Loss of Innocence, Individual Vs Society, and Triumph over Adversity and Love Conquers all will be the central themes in "Chained”, these themes will be explored via the clever manipulation of film elements such as Mise En Scene, Folie, Shot, Lighting and Script.

In custom with the French New Wave technique, I believe the fractured footage will work well in conveying my themes and messages and present a very “outside the box” take on a short art film. While “Chained” will have sections of film, “the jump cut”, employed so heavily by French New Wave technique will show a different type of scene construction, for example: While a scene is being shown, a jump cut will occur showing a completely different set and action. Throughout my film there will be 4 sections, one including a section of footage that depicts “the homosexual” drowning under water, trying his hardest to reach the top for air but never quite getting there symbolically representing the constant pressure of revealing ones sexuality . Another section will establish “the homosexuals” story and lifestyle, depicting him going about his daily life with chains and weight locked onto his body, symbolising the weight of keeping his secret to himself and also showing the fathers homophobic stance. The next section will depict the homosexual’s loss of innocence and change within his self, where he meets the boyfriend and begins a relationship, the boyfriend slowly lifts a weight off his shoulder and unlocks a chain/weight with every meeting. The final section will show the homosexual confront his father about …show more content…
The film will also take a short perspective from the father near the end of the film to show his change in emotion which is necessary to the conclusion of the piece. Techniques of French New Wave I plan to incorporate include Black and White film, rapid scene changes, natural sound & light, little to no budget and long tracking shots filmed with the camera in hand. While improvised dialogue is another technique in which to film, “Chained” will feature no script but rather rely on symbolic imagery and soundtrack to represent and convey
