Act 5
Hamlet arrives from England after being a prisoner on a pirate ship. Hamlet and Horatio meet at the graveyard and witness two clowns throwing skulls around and singing while digging graves and Hamlet thinks that their actions are disrespectful to the dead. Hamlet realizes as he talks to the gravediggers that no matter how powerful you are in life, you will end up in the dirt the same as everyone else. When Hamlet recognizes the skull of Yorick, a childhood jester that he remembers, he begins to discuss man’s inability to control his fate after death and how man is insignificant in general. Hamlet
Hamlet is the protagonist of the novel and is born to Gertrude and King Hamlet, however his father dies and his mother marries the King’s brother, Claudius. Later on, Hamlet discovers that King Hamlet is murdered by Claudius and attempts to avenge his father’s death. Hamlet is a character that has an existentialist perspective regarding the world, and he spends lots of time pondering the impossible questions that the world faces. He acts obsessively and insane at times and is a man so complex that he acknowledges himself that he does not understand himself. He has a deep passion for Ophelia, the daughter of Polonius and brother of Laertes, however because of how his mother marries so quickly he has a deep mistrust of women in …show more content…
He is passionate about his family and his family’s reputation and does everything in his ability to keep his family’s reputation from being dishonored. When Ophelia drowns and Polonius is murdered by Hamlet, he decides to avenge their deaths by challenging Hamlet to a duel in which Hamlet should die no matter what due to his scheme with Claudius. He serves as a double in regard to Hamlet because of how they both attempt to avenge their father’s death and try to spill the other party’s blood in order to not be deemed as a coward.
8. Ghost
The ghost is a spirit that claims he is King Hamlet and informs hamlet of how he actually died and why he is not in heaven. He is in purgatory since he does not have the opportunity to repent before Claudius pours poison in his ear. Hamlet ponders the ghosts intentions and considers that the ghost may be a devil in disguise, however when Hamlet finds out that Claudius really did murder the King, he realizes that the ghost is not evil, but actually his father in desperate need of help.
