Over 50 countries were fought in nearly every part of earth. Most people do not really know when the war officially started. Some say it began when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Others say the war began when Japan invaded Manchuria on September 18, 1931 (World War II). They wanted to build a powerful empire by occupying land south and east of Germany. Also, they wanted to overrun France with air assaults in order establish peace with Britain by force. Another of Germany’s goal was to defeat the Soviet Union, capture Caucasus Oilfields, and implement Hitler’s plan for a European New Order. Hitler also wanted to wipeout communism and eliminate all the Jews and other persecuted groups. This was called the Holocaust (World War II).
The Holocaust was a major part of the war. It started in 1941 and ended in 1945 (World War II). The Nazis were persecuting the Jews and other religious groups. They killed over 6 million people at concentration camps. The names of the camps in Poland were Chelmno, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek, and Auschwitz-Birkenau. At camp Auschwitz-Birkenau over 2 million people were killed (The Holocaust).
Another major event in World War II was the Battle of Britain. The battle occurred from July 10 – October 31, 1940. It was the turning point in the war. An interesting fact about this war was that it is the only ever battle to be fought in air (World War II).
The Battle of Normandy was fought between the United States, Britain, and Canada forces against the German forces occupying Western Europe. On June 6, 1944 D-Day occurred. 160,000 Allie troops and 30,000 vehicles arrived on the 50 mile French coastline. It was a costly war for the United States taking 9,000 American lives
