Main causes of The Great War For years historians have argued over the main causes of The Great War, more famously know as World War 1, however, it is quite obvious that the leading cause for the costly endeavor was Imperialism. The want for expansion was rampant for most European countries, and it was even said that “In their haste to conquer and colonize, the imperial powers stumbled over each other, repeatedly clashing in one corner of the globe or another,” (38).
