The freedom to live as equals is essential to the American Dream because without it we would dream no more. In her essay “Defining the American Dream”, Maier notes that the “idealistic vision of the American Dream assumes that people are not discriminated against on the basis of race religion, gender, and national origin ... which is unfortunately not true in the United States” page 1. As I agree with that I would add that ideally people would not be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. After all, it was just last year that same-sex marriage became legal in the United States. It took the “Land of the Free” 237 years to allow people to love who they want. College - the main goal I’ve had throughout all of my childhood. I needed to do well in early education to do well in elementary school. I needed to do well in elementary school to get into the gifted program in middle school, and so on and so forth. Now, here I am as a PSEO student with no clue where to go next. And even then, it’s a wonder I’ve gotten this far. The New York Times published an article by Nicholas Kristof titled “The American Dream Is Leaving America”; Kristof`is a critic of the American education system calling it “the civil rights challenge of our era” page 3. Kristof also reports that “in particular, we fail at early education” page 3. I concur with Kristof and choose to augment his argument; if we fail at early education, we fail at later education. We do this in two ways. One is that if a student is falling behind in 1st or 2nd grade, they will continue to fall behind and might not even make it into college. The other is that college is outrageously expensive. If you spend the majority of your savings on college, you are going to give up a lot of your time to go to work.
