Maid Maria Gender Roles

Maid Marian is the definition of changing gender roles throughout the different variations of the Robin Hood tales. She to me had the most profound changes because it actually showed a meaningful change. Changing times caused for the demand of a more realistic portrayal of women in the form of Maid Marian. She goes from merely just Robin’s wife to holding her own in the tales. Marian in classic ballads is not very strong, she portrayed mostly as the love interest to Robin Hood and his enemy the Sheriff of Nottingham. As the tale progressed to the movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves she was a lot more outspoken and strong as compared to her counterpart. She at first in tales was honestly just the true love to Robin Hood and the love interest as well to the Sheriff of Nottingham. Maid Marian was basically another reason as to why Robin and the Sheriff did not get along besides the fact that he was thief even if he was for all the right reasons. Marian is the only character in the tales to the movie that actually had a lot of changes. In the first classic tales she was not very capable of protecting herself on her own. While, in the movie she is a more agile and skilled fighter even making Robin Hood cry for help to his companion Azeem. Maid Marian is also very smart in the movie protecting her land and people through playing the royalty card basically she did what she had to do to keep it through the chaos. Another thing was in the movie Robin actually tries to protect her and she tells him “ I can take care of myself”. In which, she would not have done in the stories no matter what you think she was just not very capable or at least not portrayed like that. Her personality had a drastic change as well, as I’ve said she went from a damsel in distress to more capable and intelligent
