Maher Arar sued the US for mistreatment but the case was blocked in February 2006 by Judge David Trager. His ruling states that rendition cases like these raise inappropriate foreign policy questions for court review. This runs counter to a pair of rulings made in 2004 by the US supreme Court that shows that government actions are not exempted from court review. Canada’s response to this was giving Maher Arar millions in compensation and an apology for giving false information of being an extremist to the U.S
When asked about the Extraordinary Rendition program Arar said “They are outsourcing torture because they know it’s illegal ” he said. Followed by him saying “Why, if they have suspicions, don’t they question people within the boundary of the law”.
Canada has done a lot in the case of Maher Arar. From building an investigation as to why Maher Arar was sent to Syria to giving Arar compensation and apology for giving false information to the U.S. This cause for Maher Arar case was 9/11. With the 9/11 attacks U.S security and foreign policy changed to try and prevent something like 9/11 from happening again.
