The negotiation was between three parties the British, the Muslim League, and the Congress Party. Later that very same year Britain granted India’s independence. However they split the country into two states India and Pakistan, which had a large number of muslims in it. Gandhi was very opposed to this division but he agreed to it because he hoped that after they got independence he hoped that hindus and muslims could live peacefully together.
This did not work however as massive riots ensued because of the division. Gandhi tried to get them to cooperate and began a hunger strike which he ended as the riots in Calcutta ceased. In January of 1948 he began another one in Dehli to stop the riots there. Unfortunately on January 30, 1948 twelve days after the riots ended he was shot by a hindu fanatic named Nathuram Godse, who did not appreciate Gandhi’s negotiations with muslims. The next day almost one million people showed up to Gandhi’s funeral procession and cremation on the bank of the holy Jumna River.
After his death his legacy continued. You look at any independence or civil rights movement since and you can see parts of Gandhi’s philosophy. People like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela influenced by this great man. He died so long ago but his legacy remains as strong as ever. He was a humble man revered by millions He died with greatness and thats all one can hope to
