Mahadeviyakka's Perception Of Women In Taming Of The Shrew

In "Other Men Are Thorn," Mahadeviyakka 's perception of men are scarred by her experience with her abusive ex-husband; this poem clearly demonstrates her distrust and resentment of men. In Taming of the Shrew, Katherina Minola is married to Petruchio, a manipulative fortune-hungry man. Throughout their marriage, Petruchio uses methods of torture (sleep deprivation, starvation, etc.) on Katherina in an attempt to make her submissive and adopts the behaviour similar to an abusive lover. This interaction causes Katherina to change herself and her perception of men to be more aligned with the poet. By comparing Katherina’s experience to Mahadeviyakka’s experience, we are able to see the underlying theme of abuse towards women to gain control and …show more content…
This idea can be exemplified by Petruchio. Without even meeting Katherine, her reputation as a shrew attracted Petruchio, claiming that he “hear[s] no harm”(182) and takes on the challenge of marrying her as one of his many quests. He has heard “lions roar”(195) and “heard the sea… with winds, rage like an angry boar chafed with sweat,”(197) therefore isn’t threatened by some woman. In this scene, his use of animal imagery indicates his intention to tame her with forceful measures as someone might tame a lion or any other wild animal. At their wedding, he uses a scare tactic by loudly proclaiming her as his property in front of her family to isolate her and by not allowing her to eat or sleep, he introduces begging into Katherina’s life. In other words, humiliation is used to 'tame’ Kate. Simultaneously, he uses love as an excuse to cause harm and force her into being the ideal wife he wants (worshipping him). Likewise, he beats his servants in front of Kate over the smallest mistakes as a way to show his violent spirit causing Kate to become more sympathetic towards the servant and frightened by her husband; he showcases his strength as a warning of his dominance to Kate. These characteristics are in line with the abusive husband archetype. At the same time, she is slowly coming to realization that Petruchio is trying to make a "puppet of" (106) her, thus becoming more wary of him. However, she still expresses her disdain of her lack of choices and is outspoken against his attempts to control her at this

No Gold Diggers Here When adapting The Taming of the Shrew into a movie to appeal to a modern audience, the director of Ten Things I Hate About You chose to emphasize the American ideals of love and respect instead of the commonly held Elizabethan belief that unions were akin to mutually benefitting business arrangements. Such an adaptation of the plot is demonstrated by the relationship between Patrick Verona and Kat Stratford—characters who respectively mirror Shakespeare’s Petruchio and Katherine. In both Shakespeare’s play and the modern adaptation, the Petruchio character agrees to ‘tame’ the Katherine character under the pretenses of monetary gain. In The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio is promised “twenty thousand crowns” upon his marriage…

Eric Minton’s thesis is accurate in his essay “Who is the Misogynist Monster: Petruchio, Shakespeare, or You?” because it mentions Taming of the Shrew as not being misogynist, and Petruchio and Kate having a stable relationship. Minton indicates that the play is not misogynist because of how Kate is able to be assertive and insulting. In Taming of the Shrew, Katherine says, “If I be waspish, best beware my sting” (II.i.208). Katherine is insulting Petruchio in this scene and shows how Shakespeare did not play her as a damsel in distress but as a strong, independent woman.…

The Taming of the Shrew, a movie based on the play by William Shakespeare, is the story of Katherine, the eldest daughter of Señior Baptista. It is the story of her change in character when she met Petruchio, who would later marry her. Katherine, in the beginning of the story, was a shrew, or an unpleasant, bad tempered woman. She was angry because her father only wanted to get her married so that he could marry Bianca, the calmer of the two. Her conflicting emotions on whether to get married because she wanted to or not to get married to prove a point caused her to become angry and bitter, making many people want to avoid her rather than tame her.…

Previously, I stated that Petruchio only tames Kate to an extent, because her free will remains intact enough for her to decide to play the submissive wife role. However, one cannot deny the transformation Kate has gone through physically as she is starved and poorly clothed and mentally as Petruchio's thoughts dictate her words. In the beginning, Kate the shrew uses her language to sting like a bee: “If I be waspish, best beware my sting” (2.1.213). But by the end, Kate's words do not sting but soothe as they flow with the status quo: “Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign: one that cares for thee” (5.1.158-159). Kate has not been molded into submission, but broken.…

Petruchio wants to “tame” Katherine into becoming the “perfect” woman. He states “This is a way to kill a wife with kindness, And thus I’ll curb her mad and headstrong humor.” Petruchio is saying that by depriving her of food and sleep, and saying that it is out of love, he will eventually tame her and make her into the “impeccable” wife she was meant to be. Meanwhile in 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick is very nice to Kat and tries to get her to fall in love with him because he is being paid by Joey Donner who is trying desperately to date Bianca.…

Despite the difference in status from King Lear, Katerina’s low status, pride, and ambition in Crime and Punishment also enables her to gain a new understanding of herself. The first instance of Katerina’s pride and descent into downfall is when she abusively attacks the people around her. Although she may be able to justify her actions because of Marmeladov's destruction within the family, she takes the same brutal and aggressive attitude as Svidrigailov. Katerina’s attempt to use physical violence on her children in response to her destroyed life reveals her belief that her life should be better. It is from this viewpoint that forms the foundations of Katerina’s character and pride.…

Once in his home, Petruchio’s behaviour is confronting as he wails and screams at his servants for cooking the incorrect food, as well as ripping and destroying new clothes intended for Katharina. People might view this behaviour as misogynistic, however, I interpret this a clever comedy as it highlights power struggle between the main two characters as they try to assert their dominance in the relationship. Moreover, in the penultimate scene of the film, Petruchio places an unwise bet, however, his fears soon turn into elation as his gamble comes to fruition as Katharina implores her sister and friend to be more obedient to their husbands. What the audience learns here is that both characters need rescuing in certain parts of the narrative and needed each other to be successful in a society built on status and money. Shakespeare’s masculine dominated society during the Elizabethan era was cleverly turned on its head as femininity was revealed to be crucial to the desired outcome for the main characters.…
